Lillian Rose Williams Murphy Mitchell

Lillian was sent to Carson Boarding school when she was only four years old. Approx 1915. I'm not sure why Jennie chose not to raise her herself other than the father, Murphy Williams was not in the picture very long and since remarried.

Lillian Rose Williams Mitchell 87 died Sept. 28, 1997 Rosewood Terrace Convalescent Home. A native of Bridgeport, Calif. she was born april 1, 1910 to Murphy and Jennie Summers Williams, and had lived in Sacramento for the past four years, coming from Carson City. She had also lived in Arizona and Riverside, Calif. Mrs. Mitchell worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs for many years and had worked at Stewart Indian School from 1944 to 1957 as a dining room matron. She was a tribal member of the Walker River Paiute Tribe and a member of the Native American Church. Her husband, Fred died in 1964. Surviving are son, Fred Jr. of Sparks; daughter Freda Mitchell of Sacramento; and Rose Mary Clark of Phoenix; stepdaughters Iyla Mae Rodriguez and Ursula Webb of California; sister Delores Willie and brothers, Clarence, Ervin, Everett, Jack and Louis Williams, all of Nevada; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A funeral is scheduled for 10 am Thursday at Walton's Chapel of the Valley, wit burial at Lone Mountain, Carson City.

The California birth index says Grandma was born April 1, 1911 in Mono County. In a 1920 census, shows her as a student at Stewart and lists her as 10 years old. Grandma graduated from Stewart Indian school, 9th grade, in 1928. She was 18 years old. In a 1930 census she is at Riverside at the Sherman Institute. Grandma then graduated from the Sherman Institute in Riverside, California in 1931. From there she went to work at Mt. Pleasant Indian school as a dorm matron, I believe. That is where she met Fred.

Lillian married Frederic Daniel Mitchell Sr, son of Daniel E. Ma-To-Na-Pa "Bear Paw" Mitchell and Louisa or Lula Wa ya wa wi yan Garfield, approx 1934. (Frederic Daniel Mitchell Sr was born on 3 Jul 1898 in Glasgow, Montana and died on 4 Dec 1964 in Carson City, Nevada.). The cause of his death was head injury.
