Mary Elizabeth Bachman Markley
- Born: 12 Apr 1875, Dubois, PA
- Marriage: William O. or A. or E. Markley in 1892
- Died: 19 Nov 1953 at age 78
General Notes:
Elizabeth was adopted. Her father was a Welsh coal miner killed by the Molly McGuires *see below note* in a mining dispute in Dubois, PA. Cousin Pat who lived with Grandma Markley for a time said that Grandma was a twin and they were separated to be adopted as their mother couldn't care for them. The Bachman's were German and restaurant owners.
in a 1900 census report she has had four children with only three living. They were living in Punxsutawney, Jefferson, Pennsylvania at the time. Interestingly, they list the census lists the birthplace of her parents as unknown, confirming that she was adopted.
According to a 1910 census report. Elizabeth went by Mary. Married 18 years in 1910. It said she had seven children, only five living. Parents are said to be born both in Pennsylvannia as well as herself.
In a 1920 census report she is listed as head, and William is not listed, but she is still listed as married. my father Paul said that her husband William had a mental illlness causing him to be committed at Danville, a mental institution in Pennsylvannia. She had problems with William, and reportedly kicked him out. Paul said that he died shortly thereafter, and that she had felt bad about it. Paul said she made a living by taking in boarders in her big home. She had a grapevine in the back yard and made wine. She gave him a cup of wine as a kid.
In a 1930 census she is shown as widowed. William must have died between 1920 and 1930. She is living with her eldist son Frances and wife Alma supporting the idea that her husband no longer supports her.
*The Molly Maguires were members of a secret Irish organization. Many historians believe the "Mollies" were present in the anthracite coal fields of Pennsylvania from approximately the time of the American Civil War until a series of sensational arrests and trials in the years 1876?1878. Evidence that the Molly Maguires were responsible for coalfield crimes and kidnapping in the U.S. rests largely upon allegations of one powerful industrialist, and the testimony of one Pinkerton National Detective Agency detective. Fellow prisoners also testified against the alleged Molly Maguires, but some believe these witnesses may have been coerced or bribed
Found a short obit notice saying services would be held Nov 1953 in Pennsville New York; however, must be typo, because there's only a Pennsville, NJ, it was in the Gazette Bulletin dated November 23, 1953.
