Reflection on the death of Bob Mitchell
When I went to the hospital and discovered that Bob Mitchell was dead last Friday, I asked the nurse for a cup of coffee and went out to the lobby to sit in the sun, to read over the prayers for the dying once again and to weep for my good friend.
For twelve years, Bob and I have wrestled over gears in broken lawn mowers, contested with reluctant weed eaters, trimmed hedges, painted, and put down carpet. One was never quite sure what Bob would say or do next.
It took me a long time to figure out his humor and to realize that his one liners and his ability to spin a yard were at the heart of his goodness. At some point in these past twelve years, I realized we were pretty good friends. I would miss him when he didn't come around.
Over the weekend people stopped me on the street to tell me how sorry they were I lost such a good friend. Invariably they would then tell some story about Bob and quote one of his jokes or describe some of his many good deeds. People were anxious to talk about Bob; there was a need to fill the void his sudden death had left.
When I would promise to do something the next day or next week, he would say how can I be sure? You white people have been lying to my people for 300 years. That was one of my favorites. When we had a Penance Service and Confessions scheduled, he would call up ask if it was alright to go confession even if you had to make up sins. Yet this was the very way Bob would let vou know he was a sinner himself. He never understood all the weakness that entered his life or why there were so many problems and why it was so hard to be good. With
Bob, there were not pretensions. He never pretended to be someone he was not.
And so we will miss him -not only Jessica, who brought him so such joy and love, not only his children and family. The Fire Dept., the Boy Scouts, the Knights of Columbus, the parish. Sr. Mary and all his many friends will have to cherish his memories now and pray that God will raise someone up to take his place. We thank God for sending him into our midst and we thank God and Bob for all the good he did, for all his good jokes, for his kindness, and for his ability to stay on top of a world he never fully figured out.
