Charles Courchene MISSOULA - Charles Courchene, 20-year resident of Missoula and lifelong resident of Montana, died Thursday, October 22, 1998, of cancer at Mountain Valley Hospice House. He was born Oct. 8, 1930, in Wolf Point, the son of Phillip Courchene and Sarah Mitchell. The early years were spent on a farm outside Wolf Point. He spent two years at the seminary in Kenmore, WA., at age 14 before returning to Wolf Point to finish high school. Shortly after high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Korea for two years. He had attained the rank of sergeant at the time of hh discharge. He attended the University of Montana, where he received a degree in the arts. He also went to graduate school. While there, he met Elma McCIain. They married and had two sons, John and Matt. He started the Head Start program in Wolf Point. In his life, he worked construction as a supervisor, was a teacher and writer. He worked at the Bargain Corner Thrift Store in Missoula for years, where many people knew him. Charles is survived by his wife of 18 years, Patricia; sons, John and Matt, and their children, June, Phillip, Kellan and Alex; stepchildren Stephanie Williams, Cinda Burkohl and Archie Williams; and three sisters, Dorothy Smith, Louise Courchene and Marian Hediman. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers David J. and Richard Courchene, and sisters Esther Applegate and Rosemary Fielden. Charles has a great passion for knowledge and was a voracious reader all his life. There wasn't much he didn't know. Visitations were held Oct. 7, at Garden City Funeral Home with funeral services following. Interment was held in St. Mary's Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction and care of Garden City Funeral Home and Crematory.
