Family History: Southern Genealogies #1, 1600s-1800s
Historical Southern Families, Vol. XXIII, Ford of Virginia and Kentucky, with Related Families: Mallory, Milstead, Page 20
"The Garth family derived its name from the old English word "girth", meaning circumference or girdle. (Webster Unabridged Dictionary) Nancy Garth who married John Ford was the daughter of David Garth of Goochland Co., Virginia. The record of the marriage is found in the old Ford family Bible, brought from South Carolina to Kentucky ca. 1796.
One John Garth is of record in Louisa County, Virginia, leaving his will there in 1786. (Torrance: Wills and Administrations, p. 165). The children named were: Thomas Garth, David Garth, John Garth, Sarah Mousby, Betty Rose (Ross), and Mary Ann Lobbins. These young people were attracted, like so many others, to the unimproved western lands once occupied by the Indians. The tax lists of 1800 in adjoining Albemarle County show the names of a half dozen Garth households, who at a later date had migrated over the Blue Ridge mountains to the Ohio valley."
